What are Bedbugs?

Bedbugs (or bed bugs) are small parasitic insects that feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals. Though their species is technically named Cimex lectularius, they got their more widely used name by invading homes and taking up residence in bedding.

A Close-Up of a Bed Bug

Bedbugs are usually active at night and are capable of stealthily feeding on the blood of their victims without being detected.

According to Wikipedia, alternate names for these insects used historically, include wall louse, mahogany flat, crimson rambler, heavy dragoon, chinche and redcoat.

Though pretty much eradicated in the developed world by the 40s, globalization and the ease of travel has led to a steep increase in the bedbug epidemic worldwide since the mid-nineties.
